First thing: If you ever thought to yourself, "Gosh, I have no idea what actually happened with Enron," maybe you should consider seeing a documentary called Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. I wasn't particularly interested, because it sounds boring and I didn't know a thing about Enron. I still don't understand what energy trading is, but otherwise I feel pretty solid on the sleazy awfulness that is corporate America, specifically Jeff Skilling and the hundreds of other jerks behind the Enron collapse. There's also a scene with Phillip Glass music and a strip club. It's on Instant Watch if you've got Netflix, and it's better than the trailer:

Second thing: I saw They Might Be Giants live for the first time this week and it was fucking awesome. Confetti cannons. I think it was so awesome that it was partially responsible for my plunge into total self-pity yesterday, when I felt bad about not being as great as they are, and why don't I write songs instead of novels, and then travel the world singing them to people who are really happy to hear them? And why is everything I do boring and provincial, instead of being about the cow under the sea? The same thing happens to me when I read Neal Stephenson novels. It's terrible.

Third thing: I am addicted to cleaning. I have strong urges to go through my possessions and get rid of juuuuust...a....littttttle....bitttt....more. It would be great but this is the month to do other things than clean. But my brain just doesn't want to think about other stuff. It wants to get rid of old shoes and shirts and things.

Which is totally weird, not helpful, and probably related to the....

Fourth thing: NaNoWriMo is horrible. Books are horrible. Writing is horrible. Narrative is my mortal enemy.

Fifth thing: It's sunny out. I am happy. My bike is good.

Sixth thing: We all look at the equivalent of War & Peace every single day. The internet is evil. I like simple sentences.

Well. It was a big weekend.

Most of the boring, awful cleaning of the past several months is done. We had a party this weekend, which was the official deadline for getting the house cleaned up. We pretty much made it, too. The closets hold a few boxes of miscellaneous crap that cause heart palpitations, but it's about a 90% reduction in "containers full of unknown items". It's great. My goal for the rest of the year is to maintain what we've done so far and in January start going through the last remnants of crap. It's great. I am, frankly, thrilled. I have never, ever been good at keeping things uncluttered. I love items, I love the history of items, I love finding little scraps of paper that send me back ten years, but we have a small apartment. I have other things to focus on, not the constant battle on laundry, paper, etc. This is awesome for you because it won't be absorbing my whole damn life.

Other things that happened:

-I got the second rejection on my story. I expected it, but I did not expect the nice things they wrote in the rejection. I feel both hopeful and sad. Not sure which other magazines want a talking shark story, but there are a lot of magazines out there. Guess I've gotta keep combing the markets looking for my next provider of rejection slips.

-I had a crazy allergy/asthma attack on Sunday morning at the mall. I am allergic to...consumerism? I'm fine now, but damn. It was crazy, in the throat swelling shut, eyes pouring water, sinuses filling up kind of way. Nothing like facing your own body's failure in a stall at JC Penney's, but I got home and am now perfectly alright.

-I finished my crocheted (fauxcheted?) kitten:

It looks like a cat! Sort of!

-Oh yeah, I started NaNoWriMo. Why? Because I am stupid and driven by external deadlines. And, I'd like to produce a lot of crap that I can then edit down and just plain old get some writing practice in.

That's it. I'm looking forward to a month of taking advantage of my newly organized house, cooking various squashes, playing Bioshock, making Christmas gifts and chilling the heck out. And writing a novel. Whatevs. Totally not hard.
