Melbourne is a great city to get to know. We rearranged things to spend an extra day there. Cairns - good stuff, get out to the Reef and do some rain forests. I think you have to do Alice Springs/Uluru/Olgas, as that is the most unique area in Australia. I wouldn't dream of traveling Down Under without seeing the Red Centre.
I agree, I think it's worth just seeing the middle of the country. Never went to Brisbane or Melbourne, but the outback is just so different from anywhere else in the world.
